Chastity BeltI Used To Spend So Much Time Alone
Hardly Art / Inertia

- Your fave scuzzy guitar driven foursome from Walla Walla Washington, Chastity Belt, are back with their third full length I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone. The girls tread a well worn path, employing the same minimalistic, guitar heavy four piece sound that saw previous releases No Regrets and Time To Go Home met with critical acclaim. Known for challenging gender norms and touching on feminist themes in their songs, they’ve nestled into the hearts of now grown up girls (and boys) whose palates have matured but still definitely listened to the Spice Girls in the '90s.

The last three tracks on the record are arguably the LP’s best cuts: Something ElseUsed To Spend and 5am break with Chastity Belt’s cookie cutter technique, leaving that last track 5am especially, to close the album with an immaculate, frenetic guitar and throbbing percussive crescendo. The building tension sates the craving for diversity that simmers in me for the duration of this full-length and is by and large the most satisfying and compelling track of I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone.

Erring on the side of caution, Chastity Belt’s latest offering avoids breaking any new ground, sticking to the guitar heavy, hazy vocals, driving baselines and steadfast percussion they’ve built their career around. Its a palatable combo in short bursts, but an entire record of it falls into the same languid, cozy, carefully measured formula and … it's enough to drive even the most devout dream pop/indie rock enthusiast to distraction! While much can be said for the honest and introspective lyrics on I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone, unfortunately, they don’t do enough to get this record over the line.
