The Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA), the leading award for Australia’s best emerging artists, designers, and creatives, has officially opened registrations to young achievers wanting to boost their careers with a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship and grants program.

Talented Australians aged 30 and under across seven creative fields - fashion, film, visual arts, visual communications, music, industrial and object design and photography - are invited to submit their work for a chance to receive financial support in the form of $5000 in cash and $5000 in Qantas flights, as well as a rare 12-month mentorship opportunity with leading lights of the international creative community.

In 2010, SOYA boasts a stellar line-up of inspirational mentors; Marc Newson (Design), Nicky and Simone Zimmermann (Fashion), Jan Chapman (Film), Tony Mott (Photography), Lee Groves (Music), Elizabeth Ann Macgregor (Visual Arts) and Deanne Cheuk (Visual Communication). As success stories in their respective fields, these industry leaders know that getting a break and having the right doors opened can help launch a creative career.

Celebrating its seventh year, SOYA has been instrumental in uncovering and nurturing young artists, photographers, fashion designers, filmmakers and musicians, helping them expand their horizons, build up their business and learn the ropes from some of the greatest creative minds in the world.

Remarkable SOYA winners to date have included fashion labels Antipod!um, Friedrich Gray, Romance Was Born, musicians Wolf & Cub, My Disco, Oh Mercy and Fergus Brown, artists Rebecca Baumann, Danielle Freakley and Grant Stevens, photographers James Brickwood and Nirrimi Hakanson, among many others.

SOYA is open for submissions from June 22 until the closing date of August 9 with all submissions to be made through the website www.soya.com.au.
The winners will be announced at a spectacular awards night held on November 11 at the Foundation Hall of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

SOYA’s greatest strength is its mentorship component. The SOYA mentorship offers winners the unique opportunity to sit down with leaders in the creative industries and draw on their talent and expertise, discuss their own career development, get access to high-level contacts and create strategies for building their own brands.
For mentors, it’s a chance to engage with the new generation of creative talent in Australia and help nurture the creative icons of tomorrow.

SOYA offers fashionistas aged 30 and under the chance to step up to the next level with $10,000 in cash and flights and a mentorship with Australian fashion gurus, Nicky and Simone Zimmermann.

Mentor: Zimmermann (Nicky and Simone)
Iconic Australian fashion label Zimmermann started with Nicky Zimmermann making dresses in her parents’ garage and selling them at Sydney’s Paddington Markets. Nicky’s sister Simone saw potential in the label and in 1991 she joined the growing Zimmermann business as Managing Director. In 1996, the sisters set a new benchmark in swimwear design when they launched their show-stopping collection at the inaugural Australian Fashion Week. This move launched Zimmermann onto the global fashion stage and the label has been eagerly snapped up in Australia and internationally ever since. Zimmermann has achieved a compelling following and strong international stockist list including the likes of Barney’s, Saks, Bloomingdales, Intermix and Net-a-Porter. In Australia, Zimmermann maintains 12 stand-alone boutiques, an online boutique and a presence in David Jones and other high-end fashion destinations.

SOYA offers filmmakers and animators aged 30 and under the chance to step up to the next level with $10,000 in cash and flights and a professional mentorship with internationally-acclaimed filmmaker Jan Chapman.

Mentor: Jan Chapman, Filmmaker
Jan Chapman has produced some of Australia’s most critically successful and popular films - including AFI Best Film winner, Lantana and Academy Award® winner, The Piano – and supported and nurtured the careers of some of it’s most talented filmmakers.
Jan studied at Sydney University before becoming involved in the Sydney Filmmakers Co-Op. This led to her becoming a producer in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s drama department where she produced Jane Campion’s first television feature Two Friends (1986). Since founding her own production company, Jan’s credits include: The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992), The Piano (1993), Love Serenade (1996), Holy Smoke (1999), Walk the Talk (2000), Lantana (2001) and Jane Campion’s film Bright Star (2009). She has also executive produced

Somersault (2004) and Suburban Mayhem (2006) both of which were selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes and the soon to be released feature film debut for director Leon Ford and producer Nicole O’Donohue Griff the Invisible.
Her films have won many awards including co-recipient of the Palme d’or at Cannes (The Piano, 1993), 3 Academy Awards® (The Piano, 1994), Camera d’Or at Cannes (Love Serenade 1996), over 35 Australian Film Institute Awards, and have had numerous screenings and honours across the globe at the world’s top film festivals including Venice, Toronto, Berlin and Cannes.

Jan received the Nova Award from the Producer’s Guild of America for Most Promising Theatrical Motion Picture Producer in 1994. She has been honoured for her outstanding contribution to the Australian film industry as the recipient of many lifetime achievement awards including the Order of Australia in 2004.

SOYA offers industrial and object designers aged 30 and under the chance to step up to the next level with $10,000 in cash and flights and a professional mentorship with iconic Australian designer Marc Newson, working in his Paris studio.

Mentor: Marc Newson, Designer
One of the world’s foremost designers, Marc Newson’s distinctive style can be discovered through an enormous range of designs, from watches and furniture to restaurants, recording studios, Qantas Club Lounges and even on the new Qantas A380. Marc believes designing in Australia helped his innovative work break the traditional design mould. “Coming from Australia and studying jewellery and sculpture, my design was self-taught and instinctive,” he says. Now with permanent exhibitions of his work in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, London’s Design Museum and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, Newson has become one of the most sought-after designers in the world.

SOYA offers musicians aged 30 and under the chance to step up to the next level with $10,000 in cash and flights and a professional mentorship with producer Lee Groves.

Mentor: Lee Groves, Producer
Lee Groves is a British producer, writer, composer and mixer who relocated to Sydney’s Level 7 Studios (the original 301 Studios) from London in 2007. After a remarkable and varied career spanning many years (with artists such as Black Eyed Peas, Janet Jackson, Craig David, Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, Gwen Stefani, Dave Matthews Band, Marilyn Manson amongst many others) his first Australian project was production on Bertie Blackman’s “Secrets and Lies”, which won an ARIA in 2009.
Lee was also a founding member of UK remixers and breakbeat act Terminalhead, international act Hex Orchestra and set up UK label PuSH Recordings back in 1996. Driven by the creative spirit, energy and potential of Australian talent, Lee continues to find, develop and advise new talent as well as helping established artists achieve new creative goals.

SOYA offers photographers aged 30 and under the chance to step up to the next level with $10,000 in cash and flights and a professional mentorship with acclaimed photographer Tony Mott.

Mentor: Tony Mott, Photographer
Tony Mott arrived in Australia in 1976 and has become our leading rock photographer. His photos have been published in 20 countries and they have appeared on the covers of 450 CDs and more than 700 magazines.
Tony is the photographer the bands ask for. Tony has an incredible enthusiasm for music and musicians and has the uncanny ability to capture the quintessential appeal of whoever he is photographing. His images reveal something of the mystery, the revved-up power and the adrenaline of rock ‘n’ roll. And he can tell a story... Tony Mott has toured with, amongst others, The Rolling Stones (3 times), Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac, Silverchair, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, and travels regularly with the Big Day Out music festival.

SOYA offers visual artists aged 30 and under the chance to step up to the next level with $10,000 in cash and flights and a professional mentorship with internationally-respected curator Elizabeth Ann Macgregor.

Mentor: Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, Director, Museum Of Contemporary Art, Sydney
Scottish-born Elizabeth Ann Macgregor has had a career as colourful as her famous wardrobe, beginning as Curator/ Driver of the Scottish Arts Council’s Travelling Gallery, taking exhibitions onboard a converted bus all over Scotland. This experience fired her commitment to engaging new audiences with the work of living artists. After three years working in the Arts Council of Great Britain supporting regional galleries, she spent ten years as the Director of Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, building it into one of the most respected contemporary galleries in Britain. Since taking over the Directorship of the MCA in 1999, Elizabeth Ann has transformed the institution (since introducing free access, attendances have more than trebled) so it’s no surprise to hear that the MCA was named Sydney’s favourite museum in a Chamber of Commerce survey. She was awarded a Centenary Medal for services to contemporary art in 2000, the Equity Trustees CEO award for Significant Innovation in 2007, and Veuve Clicquot Award the 2008. She is passion- ate about making art accessible to everyone and is an advocate for the arts on all levels.

SOYA offers visual communicators aged 30 and under the chance to step up to the next level with $10,000 in cash and flights and a professional mentorship with internationally recognised Australian art director Deanne Cheuk.

Mentor: Deanne Cheuk, Art Director
Deanne Cheuk is a New York-based art director, illustrator and artist from Perth, Western Australia. She got her first job as a magazine art director at the age of 19 — since then, Cheuk has art directed or designed publications, including Tokion Magazine. She has been commissioned by American Express, Dell, Lane Crawford, Levi’s, Nike, Swatch, Target, MTV, Gap, The Guardian, T Magazine and The New York Times Magazine. She has worked with David Carson, Doug Aitken and Conan O’Brien.
In 2005, Cheuk released her first book, Mushroom Girls Virus — which sold out worldwide immediately. In 2006, Target launched a line of “Deanne Cheuk” products. Cheuk sometimes self-publishes a non-profit contributor-based graphic ‘zine called Neomu. She has also judged competitions for the Art Director’s Club NY and the Type Director’s Club NY, and is on the Board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, AIGA/NY.


How to enter

• Registrations for SOYA are open from June 22 to August 9, 2010. All entries must be submitted to www.soya.com.au.
• Entrants must be Australian citizens or residents aged 30 and under to enter.
• Entrants must create a profile and submit work in one or more of the seven SOYA categories to www.soya.com.au by August 9, 2010 to be eligible.
• Entrants are advised to provide three to ten different examples of their best original work with descriptions.
• Entrants are also advised to provide supporting material to demonstrate how they are developing their practice and working towards defining their own unique style and approach to their own creative fields or art forms, including evidence of how they are exhibiting, presenting or distributing their work in their fields.
• Entrants are advised to include details of any websites, magazines, or other media that have covered their work, distribution outlets or events which have presented their work.

Entrants are also advised to include details of their professional web presence, study or work experience.
