You often hear debates and lectures on the topics of the future of media and journalism. But where does alternative, community and independent journalism fit into this? Given their small audiences and the rise of self-publication methods like blogs and YouTube, does it even matter anymore?

Dr Susan Forde is the author of Challenging the News: The Journalism of Alternative and Community Media. Brisbane Line spoke to her about how alternative media fits into the broader media landscape, and why she thinks it is fulfilling the role of traditional journalism better than most mainstream media.
