Sexing it up in Brisbane
Among the raunchiest events ever to see the inside of the convention centre, Sexpo is also one of the most popular. The expo about sex hit the 2 million visitor mark this year in Brisbane, a cumulative total since the event’s inception. But the message of Sexpo was slightly off target, straying too far in the direction of corny and trashy, rather than a celebration of sexuality.
The saving grace of Sexpo was the sex sessions, in particular Fai Kur’s advice on achieving the ultimate female orgasm. She had some revolutionary ideas about the effects of media and self-pleasuring on our ability to reach orgasm later in life. However, the rest of the exhibition hall was packed to the brim with gimmicks and overpriced items, making value for money very difficult to find.
While the dancers and porn stars were impressive in an “I could never do that” kind of way, the most talented person at Sexpo was just to the right of the stage. The man known as ‘Picasso’ is incredible to behold, painting portraits of Sexpo goers with nothing but his penis, bum cheeks and a few paints. He is also a great performer, working the crowd with his antics and wearing a signature 10-gallon hat.
It was clear that organisers did not expect the huge numbers of visitors, with massive line-ups for any good attractions, and about 7% chance of getting a seat for the stage shows. Nonetheless, crowds provided a good atmosphere for performers, and I’m sure retailers met their sales targets. Certainly hold out till next year to stock up on any toys and outfits, because Sexpo is the mother of all adult stores.
Sexpo is a great concept, but did not manage to create a fun, celebratory environment for people to learn about sex and develop their sexual identity. Maybe if the showgirls’ performance didn’t involve a strap on dildo, a strong emphasis on bimbos, nasty sex and scrag fights, the experience would have captured the better side of bonking.
