Amendments for growing medicinal cannabis needed
The New South Wales committee has recommended the medicinal use of cannabis and Brisbane Line reporter Saskia Edwards spoke with Dr John Kaye, Greens member of the NSW Parliament and Legislative Council and the President of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation, Dr Alex Wodak. Both have said these recommendations should go ahead.
What does that mean for medical research centres? Earlier I spoke with Julie Bower, wife of the director and founder of Mullaway Medical Cannabis, Tony Bower. Tony is currently locked up for growing cannabis for his research.
The Mullaway Medical CAnnabis has been writing to the government since 2008 about their findings of the medicinal use of cannabis.
The recommendations would allow dying Australians, or terminally ill patients to use medical cannabis. There would also be a change in the drug misuses and trafficking Act to cover authorised medical use of Cannabis.
Julie Bower also says an amendment is needed for the international legislation of growing cannabis if these recommendations get accepted.
