Negative Gearing Remains Untouched: Budget 2017

Recently, the Australian Taxation Office released tax data for 2014-15 which illustrates how Australians engage with tax concessions. The Federal Government has committed to retaining negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount. The concessions have been targetted in the housing affordability debate and have been partially blamed for locking first home buyers out of the market. Despite the data which shows that high income earners receive the greatest benefit from negative gearing, Scott Morrison maintains that it is ordinary Australians who are benefitting from negatively gearing property.

4ZZZ reporter Lucy Czerwinski spoke with Australian Perspective Fellow at The Grattan Institute Danielle Wood, about the data, as well as Labor's proposed changes.
