Carbon tax hits schools hard

Canteen operators at schools across the nation have predicted the rise in cost of children’s school lunches by almost 10 per cent.

The increase in prices comes as schools receive their first electricity bills following the introduction of the carbon tax which was approved by the upper house in November 2011.

Spokesperson for Climate Change Minister Greg Combet said that the government would provide “an average of $10.10 per week in household assistance in the form of tax cuts, increases in pensions and increases in Family Tax Benefits” to combat rising costs.
