Scientists want more protection for coral reefs

Scientists concerned over heat stress damaging coral, have proposed a new strategy to save oceans from global warming.

According to Professor Hoegh-Goldberg of the Global Change Institute at University of Queensland, rising ocean temperatures and acidity could outstrip the ability of marine species to survive. A recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, has reported that the current actions found in the National and international policy are not enough to with stand the impacts of the carbon dioxide emissions. Mr Hoegh-Goldberg has suggested the use of shade cloth, electrical current and genetic engineering to approach marine management. The shade cloth could be used to protect corals from heat stress, which leads to bleaching and death.
