New alarms testing the waters for whales

A test alarm off the coast of Botany Bay's Cape Solander has been set up by a Sydney research team to prevent whales from getting snared in nets and man-made obstacles.

The alarm, commonly called a pinger, sends out a low frequency beep that is audible to whales who travel along the coast during their annual migration.

Research leader, Rob Harcourt, said that “stopping entanglement is much more important for conservation than stopping whaling," as it was one of the top causes of whale mortality worldwide.
