Protests rock Sweden's peaceful image
An anthropologist from Malmo University, Aje Carlbom, suggests that the geographical segregation of immigration populations in Sweden are causing them to feel isolated and distant from the society in which they live. Sweden’s liberal immigration policy has led to the country being one of Europe’s largest destinations for immigrants.
Stockholm Police and the Swedish government are downplaying the consequences of the riots, with little information about the number of people injured and damage to property.
The riots have shattered Sweden’s international reputation for being a country of tolerance and nonviolence. Mr Carlbom suggests that Sweden is just becoming like ‘every other country.’
