Shortened life expectancy for mental health sufferers
The study by UQ's School of Population Health found that accidents and suicide are not the leading cause of death for sufferers of mental illness, but instead are physical illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and cancer as people with mental illness are more likely to miss early warning signs.
The research has shown that the life expectancy gap between average Australians and those with mental illness is worse than the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
