Queensland Government to form the first permanent disaster recovery agent

Australia’s first permanent disaster recovery agency is going to be established by the Queensland Government, in order to deal with severe storms and cyclones that are brought on by climate change.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad has said that ‘Queensland bears the brunt of most of the natural disasters that beset Australia’ and said that new laws currently before parliament this week would make the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, which was originally created to deal with the damage caused by the 2011 floods, a permanent arm of the government.

Natural disasters have killed 38 people since the 2011 floods, and cost Queensland US$15,9 billion, according to the World Bank.
