Nauru detention staff dismissed for social media abuse

Eight guards from the Nauru detention centre have been suspended after a photograph circulated on social media showing them posing with Pauline Hanson at the Reclaim Australia rally in Brisbane.

Transfield hires staff on the basis of cultural sensitivity however the photograph as well as other comments made on social media indicate the men endorse Hanson’s anti-immigration politics and that they have propagated anti-Islamic sentiment.

The suspension of the eight guards is the latest in a number of similar dismissal incidents related to social media, indicating Transfield’s discomfort at employers using social media to reveal the culture within detention centres.
