Australia recalls ambassador to Indonesia over Bali Nine executions

Australia will recall its ambassador from Jakarta in the first official reaction to the overnight execution of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran by an Indonesian firing squad.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the very important relationship between Australia and Indonesia has suffered as a result of what has been done in the past few hours. He says the executions were cruel and unnecessary.

Ministerial contacts between the two nations continue to be suspended, but Mr Abbott said he hopes this “dark moment” will not prevent restoration of the relationship between Australia and Indonesia.

Australia’s ambassador Paul Grigson is expected to return to Australia by the end of this week.
