New South Wales state health minister Brad Hazzard has backed the call to ban e-cigarettes in smoke free areas of the state.

Several groups including the Cancer Council, Council on Smoking Health, and Heart Foundation urged the NSW Government to legislate the change.

Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory have already enacted the ban.

 

 

Briefing notes show Palaszczuk government ignored police over Ipswich closure

Briefing notes have shown the Palaszczuk government ignored advice from police and went ahead with upgrading the Ipswich Police Communications Centre.

Documents between the Queensland Police Service senior management, and the then-police minister, show the QPS spent months lobbying for the ageing centre to be closed on the grounds of cost and efficiency as part of the statewide modernisation of communications.

The documents are likely to reignite the controversy over the facility, linking the decision to keep the centre open to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s support for disgraced former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale.

 

 

Police investigate road surface following the death of a cyclist 

A police investigation is underway following the death of a cyclist on an Indooroopilly road yesterday.

Police are investigating whether the rider lost control and if the road surface had any part to play in the accident.

The 54 year old cyclist collided with a ute travelling in the opposite direction.

Asylum seekers and refugees at the Manus Island detention centre have been digging into the ground overnight in an effort to find water.

The stand-off between the 600 men inside the detention centre and immigration authorities is entering its second day after water, power and food supplies to the detention centre were cut off after its official closure on Tuesday.

Paul Manafort has three passports and ties to Russian oligarchs, prosecutors say

According to US federal court documents, former campaign manager for Donald Trump, Paul Manafort, had three US passports, millions in assets and ties to Russian oligarchs.

These charges come from special counsel Robert Mueller’s five-month-old investigation into alleged Russian efforts to tilt the 2016 presidential election in Trump’s favor.

The allegations are not related to campaign activities but reveal close ties to Russia and include activities from 2006 to 2017, which overlaps with the time spent working on Trump’s campaign.

Six finalist have been named for the United Kingdom’s most prestigious architecture award.

The Stirling Prize recognises the building that has made the greatest contribution to the evolution of architecture.

Royal Institute of Architects have shortlisted a photography studio, a pier, and a low-cost housing development for the prize.
