A Day on the Green

During his much-acclaimed, always-innovative career, we’ve come to expect Paul Kelly to push his musical boundaries. And so it was with his most recent album and tour, Paul Kelly Presents The Merri Soul Sessions.   After sell-out shows nationally earlier this year - and rejoicing in the notion that you can never have too much of a good thang Paul is reprising this hugely entertaining project for a day on the green. Such an exceptionable concert experience needs company of the highest order and that we have, with the tour’s very very special guest, the wonderful Lucinda Williams, returning to Australia for the first time since 2012.   Our own alt country queen Kasey Chambers joins the tour, as does the special talent that is Marlon Williams making this one of the “must-see” bills of the year. The tour plays Sirromet Wines, Mt Cotton on Sunday November 29.   In case you missed it the first time around, The Merri Soul Sessions is a unique concert experience with 10 musicians and performers led by Paul with lead vocalists Dan Sultan, Clairy Browne, Kira Puru, Vika Bull and Linda Bull joining for an electrifying soul revue. All six vocalists perform songs from the album Paul Kelly Presents The Merri Soul Sessionsalong with a dose of Paul Kelly hits.   The shows were described as “joyous” and “vibrant”, with the singers “having the time of their lives on stage”. A five-minute film by Andy Doherty about the Merri Soul Sessions album and featuring live footage can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/mme6FnU2wSY.   “I'm looking forward to singing again in beautiful places with all my Merri Soul pals as well as Lucinda, Kasey and Marlon,” Paul said. “More women all up than men. Bring it on!” This much-loved troubadour’s most recent honour was receiving the prestigious JC Williamson Award at the Helpmann Awards on July 27 recognising his ‘outstanding contribution" to the Australian performing arts industry. a day on the green promoter Roundhouse Entertainment is thrilled to welcome Lucinda Williams to the winery stages. Hailing from Louisiana, USA, this three time Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter has been maneuvering down a path all her own for more than three decades now, amassing an adoring fan base along the way.
Named “America’s best songwriter” by Time Magazine in 2002, she has released 11 acclaimed studio albums, from 1988’s breakthrough ‘Lucinda Williams’, to the landmark ‘Car Wheels On A Gravel Road’ in 1998 to last year’s double-album offering ‘Down Where the Spirit Meets The Bone’.   At 62 she is in the middle of the most prolific period of her career, as always refusing to rest on her laurels, continuing to push her creative boundaries. The album received rave reviews in Australia being called “timeless, heartfelt and beautiful” (The Music), “having beauty and heart” (the SMH), while The Age said “there’s half a dozen bona fide classics (of the country soul sound) here but for Williams they seem effortless, such is her mastery of the form.” Watch Lucinda videos here: http://lucindawilliams.com/videos/   In great news for her fans, Lucinda will also be performing two shows of her own (presented by Frontier Touring) at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on December 2 and Melbourne’s Forum Theatre on December 7. Kasey Chambers, who has toured with Lucinda in the US and is one of her biggest fans, is delighted to be part of this very special tour. Her seventh solo album ‘Bittersweet’ reaffirmed her reputation as one of our best story-tellers. Working with guest musicians Bernard Fanning and ironically Paul Kelly’s nephew Dan Kelly (guitars), it won Album and Single of the Year (for ‘Bittersweet’) at the 2015 Tamworth Country Music Awards and Country Album of the Year at last year’s ARIA’s, amongst many other accolades. The album was released in the US on July 28 and Kasey is currently there touring to support it. Check out this great review from the Huffington Post http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/7959678.   Marlon Williams is going somewhere good real fast. This New Zealand born singer/songwriter who now calls Melbourne home, has attracted plenty of attention and for all the right reasons. His self-titled debut album, released in April, showcases his amazing much-talked about voice, whilst his live shows have won rave reviews. He’s been described as having “the voice of an angel” and as “the impossible love child of Elvis, Roy Orbison and Townes Van Zandt”. Miss it at your peril!
