Sandcastle

- Perth blues-rocker Abbe May really rocked my socks off with her first album Howl & Moan. She's not one to sit still and has appeared in a couple of slightly different incarnations, sporting slightly different sounds since then: Abbe May and the Rockin' Pneumonia, Abbe May and the Fuzz and so on. I'll be honest, nothing else she did really removed my furry footwarmers in the same way as her debut. That is, until now. Once again it is just Abbe May on the masthead and she gets all the glory for this fantastic second album, Design Desire. You may well have heard most of it already - there was a large number of advance singles in the long run-up to the actual album. You might also think that leaking all the good'uns early would leave you with nothing you'd actually want to hear on the album - far from it. That's especially impressive since May has once again changed-up her style, really toning down the vocal assault which was such a prominent part of Howl & Moan. Her willingness to take that risk and dial it back imparts subtlety, variation and an Allison Mossheart-esque quality of seduction and menace. Take note you world-famous blues-rockers, Abbe May has designs on your glory.
