Black LipsArabia Mountain
Vice / Co-Operative / Universal

- Bratty-garage-punks The Black Lips are a perfect example of how to be in a good band that constantly brings out good albums without ever really blowing anyones' face off. Album number six, the appropriately Black Lipsingly titled Arabia Mountain, sees the group going back to the basics, recording an album of noisy-yet-so-laidback, short-sharp gems, helmed mostly by musical heavyweight Mark Ronson. There's no doubt Marky Mark has a decent musical chops, but it's a hats off to him for remaining reasonably restrained throughout the record, adding subtle flourishes and a slick production quality that keeps the band sounding raw, but also nice & crisp. This first cut from the record, Family Tree is about as hectic as the whole album gets, a mad rush of sax-o-phone, dirty cowboy gee-tar & a chorus made for singing along to. For a band that's reputation seems based on dudes mackin' on each other and getting their wangs out they can certainly write a rad-ass song.
