Rock Action / Inertia

- Benjamin John Power, one half of the much touted electronic duo Fuck Buttons has released a side-project he's been toying with in his bedroom for a while. I'm pretty certain Power is not the half of FB that brings the beats as there is not one on this entire album, unless you count the epic pulsing quality that slowly spins, like the arm of a spiral galaxy, or like a blue whale, rolling in the deep. You'll have to forgive the hippie-ish imagery, but when it comes down to it this is a lot like a relaxation album. Albeit one which - with prolonged exposure - will cause you to mutate into a giant, space-faring insect, taking to the cosmos, never to return. Power himself says he was aiming for a sensation analagous to the mental state achieved in hypoxia (that's oxygen deprivation, btw). Presumably he was referring to the pervy, auto-erotic part, not the 'oh crap I can't breathe' one. Blanck Mass is an amorphous blob of noise and I was ready to write it off on that basis. However, I must say it's a grower. There's something uncanny, hidden in it's mesmeric, shimmering folds of the sound, something that demands that I listen just one more time...
