BorisAttention Please
Sargent House / Other Tongues

- What the hell are they doooing!? This doesn't sound like Boris, this sounds like the friggin Sneaker Pimps! Woah, slow down, let's not get too excited, Boris are just experimenting. And how! The new album Attention Please is just one of four full-length releases for the band this year. Heavy Rocks (which came out on the same day and shares its name with an older Boris record - whaaa?) was more like your traditional Boris... well, more like it than Attention Please, but closer in reality to Guitar Wolf than the utter sludginess for which Boris is renowned. Attention Please, by contrast, gives guitarist Wata all of the vocal duties (where previously she had very few) and lets her sing quietly and duskily out the front while the other two members try to stuff the Boris sound into a cupboard and hide it, but with little bits slipping out every now and then. Weird. Well that's Boris, but just not the usual kind of Boris weird. It is really interesting that Sargent House and Other Tongues gave us Attention Please and not it's darker twin Heavy Rocks. Heavy Rocks is like the life preserver for traditional Boris fans and without it Attention Please may be a very unsettling experience for them. I guess they're trying to see what new fans they can reel in with an 'exciting new sound'. I'm not sure it actually is that exciting, there are certainly elements that are pretty neat, but often it feels like Boris trying to tread around on tippy-toes and not necessarily doing a very good job of it.
