Albert's Basement

- Nothing inspires awe more than to gaze up at the vast infinity of space. The sense of pure existential wonder at the inconceivable scale of the universe, and the realisation of your own insignificance within it. Melbourne electronic duo Dry Mouth tap into that wonder on 'Astral Outback', albeit while gnawing on raw roo meat somewhere in the Simpson desert.

The cassette only release consists of two 20 minute sides. There are no track names, or songs to speak of. This is a purely instrumental affair where identity means nothing. Looped drum machines are buried within the echo heavy noise of effect laden synths, keys and tape manipulations. The lo fidelity of the recording and tape format makes the whole thing sound like a distant radio transmission from a 1970's deep space probe. The result is eerie and fascinating.

'Astral Outback' does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere and mood that fits somewhere loosely in-between the darker moments of 'Wake In Fright' and the 'Gallipolli' film soundtrack. Conceptual Australiana of this variety may not be to the taste of the comfortably well adjusted, but there's no doubting the power this cult music can summon to fire up the old imagination.
