Together At Last is the debut solo album of renowned singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy of bands such as Uncle Tupelo, Golden Smog, Loose Fur, and most famously Wilco. Consisting of acoustic renditions of songs from his wide-spanning career, the track list reads more like a greatest hits album than a debut album. A veteran troubadour, Tweedy has been particularly prolific in recent years. After a multitude of recent releases, consisting of Wilco’s 2016 and 2015 albums Schmilco and Star Wars, as well as the 2014 double-album Sukierae under the moniker Tweedy (a band consisting of Tweedy and his son), fans have been spoiled by the singer’s heavy output. Although Together At Last contains no new songs, it is a unique addition to Tweedy's discography.

Opening track, Via Chicago, first heard on the 1999 Wilco album Summerteeth, simply consists of three repeated chords. Without the arsenal of his Wilco band mates, Tweedy strums the melancholic chords and blows on a harmonica to bolster this stripped-down version. The results are breathtaking, owing largely to the dark and brilliant lyrics typified in the arresting opening line, “Dreamed about killing you again last night / And it felt all right to me”. As is the case with many Wilco songs, the avant-garde drumming of Glenn Kotche or the virtuosic guitaring of Nels Cline can overshadow Tweedy’s poetic lyrics, but on Together At Last, they stand front and centre. Intimate and earthy, it feels like he's playing in your living room. Unabashed, Tweedy leaves in the sounds of creaking seats and occasional missed notes to create this sensation organically.

Although Wilco are known for their eclectic sound, most of their songs are built around Tweedy’s wispy vocals and rustic acoustic guitar, which is what’s on show on Together At Last. The songs are stripped down to their barest form like a painting reduced to a sketch. The outcome is an album that gives great insight into Jeff Tweedy's work. Scoping his brilliant career, Together At Last proves that great songs are a great regardless of production and arrangements.
