- Good Love is a humble title for the debut LP from Brisbane garage-pop band Major Leagues. Drawing from a range of sounds, genres and influences, the twelve track record is concise yet complex: the band's standard mish-mash of pop, garage, shoegaze and a general DIY sound all coming together into a nutshell.

The title track is a prime example of their dreamy, garage sound that borders on shoegaze at times. The reverb heavy guitars and keyboard riffs should overpower the soft vocals, but instead numb them, in a cathartic way – having the vocals sit just ever so slightly in the background creates a feel-good vibe – this song makes you feel like lying on the grass on a sunny day.

Earlier single It Was Always You is more beat driven and poppy than other cuts on the record. This track doesn’t waste time getting to the point – the main lyric “It was always you” opens the song, the repetitive melody simple yet catchy. The harder drum lines and sharper vocals also drive the song home, making it into a compact tasty treat, rather than a sparkly shoegaze slice. NONO JOJO also falls into the same fun-pop box. It’s nice to see bands can still pull off the tacky key-change and own it.

If you're too much of a purist you may not like what you get here. Too poppy for the avid shoegaze fan, not polished enough for the hardcore pop listeners, and too practised for true garage nuts, Major Leagues can sound a bit outcast in any playlist. However, the mashup of styles just seems to work for them, creating an individual sound rather than an indecisive one.

In Major Leagues' own individual style this isn't a good record – great, excellent, or marvellous would all be better ways of describing it. It's still that unusual mishmash of style and certainly not a party banger to play on your Saturday night. I reckon it's perfect for those Sunday afternoons where you’re deliberating drinking your hangover away. An unusual band to be enjoyed in unusual circumstances to an unusual degree.
