- Is perhaps the only thing more surprising than that the Bronx did a mariachi album that they did a second one? Not really. For a bunch of screamy, distorty, thumpy white guys they do sure a good impression of a mariachi band. The wailing trumpets, sweet string arrangements, accordian and close harmonies - the only thing they don't do is sing in Spanish, which presumably goes a long way to bringing this style to a fanbase which might otherwise have cheerfully crucified them for their little change of tune. That's worth bearing in mind - if you didn't hear the first record, don't go looking for a punk band hidden in a Mariachi gimmick - you won't find it - and I think that needed to be the case to do justice to this transformation. The Bronx were never one of punk's stupider or less musical bands, but damn, these guys are versatile and not only do they have enough mariachi in 'em for a second record I'd say they could succesfully do a bunch more, if they didn't get bored and go and... I dunno, record Beethoven's last four quartets instead? Enjoy it while you can!
