Laughing Outlaw

- That seedy, enormous, Russian Elvis who strutted the land for so many years at the front of his Black Sea Gentlemen has changed his brand of brill cream. Now it's all about Cowboys ... on surfboards! Yes, well the name of the album rather gave it away didn't it? The combination of country and surf, thrown in the blender and whipped to a noirish froth is one that suits the band to a tea. They're so comfortable with it Mikelangelo often just hangs ten while the band plays on, for half the record, actually. Given that Mikelangelo's strutting and blackly hilarious ballads were such a part of their fantastic live show, I wonder how that works now? Actually Mikelangelo's style seems to be changing a little (it may just be the change of context) but I can hear a Tex Perkins-ish quality sneaking in and it helps binds the group together as one... like a posse. On surfboards.
