- Mount Kimbie, comprising of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos, encroached notoriety upon the release of their 2010 debut Crooks And Lovers, which relied heavily on (non-) dialogue. The album gained them a cult-like following and saw them unwittingly define the phrase ‘post-dubstep’, a term which sounds like cruel slander for fans of the band’s downplayed ambient sound, but rather perfectly sums up their musical package. Three years later and their follow-up album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth has them employ the same wonky bass, sweeping synthesizers and syncopated drum beats but with dashes of difference.

Cold Spring Fault Less Youth is still musically warm, laden with layers of texture, awkward electronic effects and ambient as hell, fit for anywhere but the Pitbull-filled dancefloors of nightclubs everywhere. However, this time around Mount Kimbie have invited the fresh-faced King Krule to sing on the wobbly You Took Your Time and Meter, Pale, Tone - inciting severe melancholy with his sulky vocals. On the single, Made To Stray, we stray closer to the dancefloor with melodic hooks and Foals-esque vocals from the duo. The line Made To Stray taking place as a pop motif, repetitive and catchy as hell.

The album is a measure more confusing than its predecessor, despite the fact that the instrumentation opts for more organic, traditional sounds. Songs like Break Well start off with a hefty two and a half minutes of scurrying, ambient noise which isolates the listener, notwithstanding the fact that after the 2.30 minute mark an inviting, psychedelic bassline appears, only to stop abruptly. The only two tracks on the album that stay true to the tried and tested formula opted for on the iconic Crooks And Lovers are Sullen Ground and Slow. Both tracks offer a minimalist sound that is intimidating, fit for the days of yore when the nightclub-less vibe still retained an element of excitement, rather than the other tracks on the album which are like a perpetual, over-thought, yawn-fest.
