RedcoatsRedcoats
Island / Universal

- I'm not quite sure what a band like Melbourne's Redcoats is doing on Island Records. I guess maybe they're not quite pounding enough to really fit in with their stoner heroes like Kyuss, maybe Island likes that. I mean, when I was listening to this first off I didn't think Stoner. Psychedelic, yeah. Actually it kinda fits a neat niche between lighter alternative rock and the hazy, heavy groove of stoner. Emilio Mercui's high, fluttering vocals make for a very interesting juxtaposition with the band's guitar sound, almost like oil and water sometimes, but when they really get going it really hums, and, well actually they really do pound quite hard. Oh, they supported The Stone Temple Pilots ... but I won't hold that against them ;) I'm not sure which kids Island and Universal are hoping this will sell a bunch to, but I quite like the Redcoats.
