Rozwell KidPrecious Art
SideOneDummy / Cooking Vinyl

- Well, the album title truly says it all, doesn’t it? Precious Art is the third record from West Virginian power punk quartet Rozwell Kid and it may well be the young band's magnum opus, a statement that I hope is simultaneously true and false. True, because this release is the distilled and purified essence of what the band does. False because, well, I’m greedy and this four piece have cemented a well-earned hype behind anything they do – the next one could be better!

Precious Art fills all the criteria for a Rozwell Kid album: relentless, belaboured drums that churn the entire record, muscling their way through the meaty guitars -reminiscent of Superheaven and Cloakroom- that buffet you with unending walls of delicious ear candy. On the four and six string wizardry that is brought to this record: Rozwell Kid know how to write boisterous, pop-laced riffs while keeping those guitars sustained with enough guts to get heads banging. It’s the sheer size of the axe work that elevates these songs into quirky, left-of-centre anthems. Lyrically the band often get compared to Weezer, but Rozwell Kid’s endearingly arbitrary lyrical content is always delivered with, well, even more charm; not to mention that it's backed up by some ingenious backing vocals.

It is this cornucopia of delights that allows for songs about picking your nose, not being able to find a place to park the van or being granted your wish of becoming a dog to find such a welcome spot in your head. Actually it's also thanks to Jordan Hudkins’ unmatchably affable channelling of nostalgia. This almost manipulatively relatable quality is at the forefront of this record, in the form of lead single “UHF On DVD” giving everyone a good nod and knowing wink about what’s to come.

More than just filling the criteria, Precious Art is, I'm gunna say it, the epitome of a Rozwell Kid album: it will be a precedent for modern punk rock records. Clean, crisp production adds another brilliant layer to an illustriously written collection of gems. These aren't rare jewels you shut away in a safe however, no, these gems come in the form of hefty, simplistic riffs, powered along by monolithic drums, and endless vocal brilliance about whatever the hell Mr Hudkins can think of. Sometimes the most precious art is the most approachable. Rozwell Kid can do no wrong, there are no missteps. Sit down, set aside some time, and listen to your new favourite band.
