ScrapsTTNIK
Moontown

- Like many of you I’ve been an avid fan of Scraps (aka Laura Hill) since seeing her play anywhere and everywhere in Brisbane and hearing her album Classic Shits on Bedroom Suck. Since then there has been a 7" release on Brisbane’s Disembraining Machine in 2012 and an LP on the UK’s Fire Records in 2014 (in addition to a plethora of bandcamp releases). TTNIK (pronounced Titanic), her new album, is out on Canberra based Moontown Records (apparently it’s also coming out on Not Not Fun too). With every release she Scraps has refined her sound. In that way TTNIK feels more club oriented than ever before, but it maintains her very distinct brand of synth-pop.

The first track Dreams opens up with syncopated drum machine and cascading melodies. The track evolves quite a bit, with hi-hats and claps coming in towards the end (in addition to a dissonant sequence which bursts through briefly, right at the close). Lead single off the album Touch Blue hints at early acid house and Trax Records releases, but keeps it light and playful.

Kingscliff, the shortest track on the release, takes some distinctly okka voices and puts them in a sonic stew. This launches into Related To You, the bassline of which reminds one of dark-pumping EBM of Nitzer Ebb. Hill adds her own flare with effected vox and arabesque melodies.

She Devil opens with a stark arpeggio before the kick comes, Scraps launching into her signature synth-pop stylings, equal parts sombre and playful. Harlequin is seemingly a reprised version of Touch Blue, slowed down to half the pace. Baby Baby sees the album out, all pumping four-to-the-flour beats and a syncopated bassline.

For a decade Scraps has been a stalwart in the local scene and has always forged ahead, doing her own thing. Her more dance-centric sound is a logical extension of her previous recordings, and evokes the likes of BrainbeauX in O and Holy Balm. It doesn't in any way detract from the Scraps you used to know. With each release Scraps proves herself to be one of Brisbane’s treasures.
