- Get funky Adelaide! The Shaolin Afronauts sound like they could be from lots of places, but hardly South Australia. I mean, they didn't even have convicts - how can they have the funk? Well, they do have Womadelaide I suppose and the Afronauts certainly turned some heads there as they took the stage all mysterious-like in their Shaolin cowls. Anyway like some other great Australian funk outfits (The Bamboos for instance) the Afronauts have signed up with a UK label, Freestyle, to try and find more funky love overseas. So this record headed over there before coming back to us - not very environmentally friendly! Well, whatever the cost the Afronauts pay off handsomely on Flight Of The Ancients with their 11 member line-up (I've said this before - how do these funkestras make any money?) banging out a frenzy of afrobeat but also mixing it up with sweet and smooth African tinged jazz. It is a variation that sets them apart from much of the funk revival and is just another reason to give them a listen. Oh, in case you were wondering how they do live - just check out the video below.
