- Vetiver, though they've never done too badly in a critical sense, seem to have trouble finding their place, at least in the ears of listeners. After moving out of freak-folk they've leaned backward and forward between indie-folk and radio-friendly easy listening. On their latest record they've decided to stick with the radio-friendly sheen, like a thick layer of vaseline that covers a variety of different genres between folk and rock'n'roll. It never morphs into dream-pop or Eno style ambient, although in the hypnotic swirl of their opener It's Beyond Me you can get a sense that they might like to try something like that. The dillying and dallying in soft-rock, country and easy going rock'n'roll is never bad, but the meandering, maybe unsurprisingly never really took me anywhere. This is perfect music to accompany something else - a summery afternoon in the pool, or being rugged up on a winter's day while writing in your diary - it's like a serving suggestion! - but by itself it might be a little too slight to hold your attention.
