- Let's get something straight! This Will Destroy You hate being called post-rock. Well, don't be someone whose job involves categorising music if you want to be popular with bands. What makes TWDY a bit more interesting than your average post-rock band - don't hit me!!! We ok? Good. What makes them interesting right now is what they do that isn't post-rock. While they deploy those classic tropes of steadily growing guitar thunder in epic, nil-vox soundscapes, they've been developing a sound which, without actually being metal, is certainly more doom and drone than ever before. Also, within their undulating mass of noise it's the mastery of timbreal effects - the muffled screaming that haunts the background of Little Smoke or the particularly rounded crashing cymbals in communal blood, for instance, that give them their edge. Actually, it's funny, the 2 advance singles: Communal Blood and Black Dunes are some of the most traditionally thunderous guitars, smashing drums and otherwise post-rocking of the lot. I think that elsewhere you'll hear a subtlety that plays out ever so slowly and verges on the hypnotising as you engage with the sound. A track like Glass Realms is more minimalist ambience than anything else - but builds in a manner that can only be described as thrilling - and has the added radio-istic virtue of being one of the shorter (less than 7 minute!) numbers. This Will Destroy You are one of those rare bands that cross genre boundaries and (this is the bit that's hard to do) find new friends whenever they do.
