Game Review
(Game) Gameprom/Sony Music - Slayer: Pinball Rocks
If you’re expecting anything mind blowing out of this game you’re going to be disappointed. After all, it’s a pinball machine simulator. But the graphics on this game are 3D rendered and incredibly detailed. Clearly Sony has opted to go all out to make the game look extra vivid. The physics engine also means he ball will actually behave like it would in real life as it shoots around through pentagrams, flames, skulls and other hellish décor. The only downside is that there’s only one table. If there were a few more different themes (Reign In Blood, anyone?) with different settings it would make the experience more fulfilling.
Obviously this game excels in the soundtrack department. Slayer has donated a few tracks from their latest album World Painted Blood, but the game would benefit from more discography. Sound effects are pretty stock standard with all the bells and whistles of a pinball machine but the pièce de résistance are the vocal overdubs by Slayer frontman Tom Araya. Nothing is more thrilling than hearing him scream “NEUTRALISED” every time you lose a ball or “FIRE WEAPONS!” when you activate something special.
Once you hit game over, your score is entered into the leader board both on the specific game and also into the global database. Currently I rank at number 72 712 with my pissweak score of 3 171 465. The guys who hold the number one spot have scores in excess of two billion, which gives you an idea just how addictive the game is. You can also challenge your friends online which is an added bonus.
The only downside with this game is that it’s a tad overpriced for only one table and it doesn’t have enough Slayer tracks. Looking at the bigger picture, it has raised awareness of a new revenue stream artists can utilise. In an age where CD sales are constantly declining, perhaps games may be the answer? After all, Aerosmith made more money off their Guitar Hero instalment than they ever made out of all their album sales. Nevertheless Slayer: Pinball Rocks has got to be the best pinball app for iPhone.
