Live Review
Client Liaison @ The Triffid
GL kickstarted the time machine turning the years back to the late 80’s/ early 90’s with their nostalgic-synth sonic textures. As always, frontchick Ella Thompson put on a stellar performance with her stunning vocals layered over sugary produced keys and drum beats. Perfectly easing the punters into the pastel, glittery world of the 80’s in preparation for Client Liaison.
The lads welcomed punters with a string of older songs, moving on to then belt out the tour’s breezy single ‘World of Our Love’ which ignited a fierce movement of clicking electric slides in the audience. With Client Liaison as our collective captain, it was the duty of every crowd member to report to the d-floor to lay down some serious fancy footwork.
In the current alternative, garage-rock populated music market, it’s refreshing and exciting to experience a band doing something extremely different. Their music nods to the Australiana of the late 80s, with a modern twist of Monte Morgan’s fresh vocals. As they played each synth-infused banger and displayed some impeccably choreographed dance moves, the overhead smog of body heat grew from the sold out crowd lathering up the sultry pop anthems.
After a short break, the band came out for an encore with a Didgeridoo in hand and a completely new costume consisting of black sequins, neon coloured earrings and tassels - an absolute recipe for beautiful success. The encore included a tremendous cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Black or White’ and closed with their crowd favourite, mystical track ‘End of the Earth’.
Client Liaison have made me appreciate and come to love pop music again and I believe they are the original pioneers to revive - what I had considered to be the most heinous era - the 80s. However, they have done it in such a genuinely fantastic fashion in that they embody their music in their personal, everyday style.
The only negative that I could deduce from their live set is that the stage doesn’t seem big enough to contain the noise of their costumes, their sensual dance moves and Tom Tilley’s chiselled jaw line. In other words - someone should definitely give these lads a stadium tour because they are whimsical!
