C.W Stoneking and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats @ The Tivoli

A double headline show is always set to be a great one - especially when its two jazz and blues legends such as C.W Stoneking and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats. Without a support act, the Tivoli was bustling from the start, with the audience predominately made up of Old Spice, Hawaiian shirts, grey beards and fedoras.

C.W Stoneking was the first to play, and him and his 6 piece band didn't waste time getting started. Double bass, drums and his sweet, subtle guitar sounds made up the rhythm section, and the backing vocalists (who also played auxilary percussion, making it look like a refined artform), and brass section stole the show, commanding the backbone of the band with their funky riffs, tight harmonies and slightly tacky dancemoves.

The jungle blues aesthetic that C.W Stoneking perpetuates in his music was delivered to the fullest capacity on the stage. Broken up with awkward banter and dry humour, his set escalated as he played some crowd favourites like I'm The Jungle Man, and '...one from the old days, and by the old days, I mean 2005', Handyman Blues. The band left the stage, leaving Stoneking to play solo, inspiring him to pull out a banjo and perform a stripped back rendition of Don't Go Dancing Down The Darktown Strutters' Ball, which he performed with the ease of a teenager playing a Blink-182 song.

With the band waiting in the wings, he invited them back to the stage to play a few more tracks, before the end of his set. The middle aged lady in front of me struggled to take a decent picture on her iPhone as C.W Stoneking crooned his way through Brave Son Of America and We Gon' Boogaloo, before reluctantly leaving the stage to make way for Nathaniel Rateliff.

Second act of the night, and the one that most punters were most excited for, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, didn't beat around the bush during the interval; there was hardly enough time left to grab another beer from the bar before the jazzy opening chords hushed the audience into preemptive silence. His 6 piece band, which was comprised of a heavier guitar arrangement than Stoneking, started up the opening riffs of I've Been Failing to welcome Rateliff to the stage. Choral vocal arrangements complemented the old school tunes, and punchy brass riffs exploded into cascading rivers of pure soul. His charismatic voice held less pain and suffering than that of Stoneking, but in no way did this impede his ability to convey the exact message he wanted to send.

The audience demographic was weird - groups of old men stood and bopped their heads to the music, two middle aged women behind me were whispering about which member of the band would be their next husband, and some rowdy teenagers were tearing it up on the dance floor, teaching people how to do the 'Texas Two-Step' Rateliff was singing about. Changing over to the acoustic guitar, which he deemed 'in tune enough', he played a couple of solo tracks to mellow out the audience, and showcase the immense capacity of his voice, and the simple beauty of the blues. Bringing back the band, S.O.B saw an increase in energy, with Rateliff commanding the audience with his masterful prowess, prompting an audience singalong. The same vocal cries prompted an encore, bringing Rateliff and the Night Sweats back on for one last reprise before bidding adieu.
