Live Review

Hidden TreasureZZZ#7 @ New Globe Theatre

Queensland Women's week has kindly supported our gig today which has enabled us to get a great line up of female artists together. There is a fabulous energy in the New Globe as we prepare to welcome our first act to the stage.

ROO is a two piece to be reckoned with. Versatile is the word that best describes these uber talented performers. Roo's guitar work is outstanding as she performs a vocal quintathlon of styles and range. Her voice is sweet then raw then smooth then gritty - she can do it all effortlessly. It sounds like her voice can span at least a couple of octaves too. Impressive is another word that comes to mind.

Roo is more than ably backed by Dean Hamilton on drums and he belts out some pretty nice harmonies too. Dean is certainly the salt to Roo's pepper, the gin to Roo's tonic, the Sonny to Roo's Cher - Nah scrap the last one, ROO is way better than Sonny and Cher. I think you get the idea. They go together like rama lamma ding dong. Go see them play soon as you can.

The Schwifties are up next. These guys are still pretty fresh on the scene but they are busting out a brilliant set. Only a couple of glitches but that is because the guitar parts Stephen is noodling out are quite complex and obviously difficult to nail. This band is one to watch on the local scene. They are unfurling some interesting sounds that plait together strands of blues, funk, soul, desert, jazz and rock. Listening to The Schwifties is like being visited by a fresh cool breeze on a hot day. Refreshing and welcome.

June Low is the biggest surprise for me today. The last time I heard them play was in a tiny venue with basic sound and they were missing a Bass player. Today they sound so full and dynamic. June Low is world class which is an accurate statement as Emma White who fronts the band and writes the songs, has performed internationally. You know that excitement that wells up, when you realise you have found something everyone is going to want to know about? I'm having that feeling now watching June Low. I will be following their inevitable rise with interest.

Today has been a magic day for female performers and we have some magnificent female artists in this city. One of the bands who demonstrates that perfectly is Ultra Material who are our final act today. These shoegaze over lords wield reverb to their advantage as they lovingly drown us in waves of lush melodic hum. There are a few people here today who have come especially to see Ultra Material play and when Artshow gets delivered the physical sensation of the pleasure meter rising is undeniable. Ultra Material tred musical paths less travelled which makes them more of a band to be experienced rather than passively listened to. Keep an eye out for them on a line up soon and go see what I mean.

Thanks to Amelia Healing for the pics and thanks to everyone for supporting Hidden TreasureZZZ, 4ZZZ and women in music. Keep an eye on the Hidden TreasureZZZ facebook page for HT news and events at https://www.facebook.com/hiddentreasurezzz/
