The Hives @ The Tivoli - Jan 2, 2013

Beginning their first show of the year in spectacular fashion, Swedish garage rockers The Hives are dressed impeccably in three piece suits and top hats. In the heat of the Tivoli, however, it doesn’t take long for the layers to start coming off, from band and crowd alike. As expected, The Hives are loud and proud, starting the show with 2007’s ‘Try It Again’ as the audience cheers and dances in delight. Their 1.5 hour long set doesn’t disappoint, serving up an energetic selection of their most popular tracks.

Under the guidance of charismatic, crowd-invading front man Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, and accompanied by their infamous percussion ninjas, the vivacious quintet switch effortlessly between their many albums. From most recent album Lex Hives and single ‘Take Back The Toys’, they take us all the way back to the year 2000, and their album Veni Vedi Vicious, for song ‘Die, All Right!’. Closing their set, what seems like far too soon, with ‘Patrolling Days’, it’s not long before the band returns to the stage for a three song encore. Throwing in a few more antics before noise restrictions kick in, front man Almqvist gets everyone in the venue to sit on the floor before ending with a thunderous delivery of ‘Tick Tick Boom’. The audience gave it 300/5, and so do I.
