Live Review

Vera Blue @ The Zoo

Raw and powerful, with the purity of folk music and the punch of a bassline.”

Vera Blue started her music career as the hopeful, young folk singer on season 3 of The Voice but since then has utilised music industry connections to branch out, rebrand and rebirth as Vera Blue. In 2016 she released a five track debut EP titled Fingertips that has had her touring, promoting and playing music festivals alongside some of the biggest music acts in Australia (Big Pineapple, BIGSOUND, performing with Flume at Splendour in the Grass!).

Vera Blue has started the year off swinging with a Slumberjack collaboration, and a new single that had her announce her recent tour and let fans know the album will be released in a not too distant future. On April 29th at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley was taken over by this young woman’s soaring vocals. This being my third time seeing her perform, you would think the effect would have worn off, but when she opened with Hold, filling the entire venue with her sound and dancing above the crowd in the front row, once again Vera Blue had my undivided attention and gave me goosebumps.

After her two support acts Mammals and Plgrms, who kept the crowd amped and the atmosphere of The Zoo energetic, Vera Blue put on an incredible show performing her hits from the last year and that list is building rapidly including: Hold, Settle, Fingertips, Like a Version cover of Breathe Life, and she closed the show with her recent single Private where I actually had to stand towards the back of the venue because the crowd went wild for that final track!

With sold out shows around Australia I can only imagine this will be one of the last intimate gigs she will do before the album is released this year, and whilst standing right beneath her in the moshpit of screaming fans I can see she really does put her heart and soul into her music and performing. She is a true talent of Australian music with a voice that I can only compare to being almost Sia like, but less brash more angelic; nothing short of a well practiced and fine tuned instrument.

It was a brilliant show, Vera Blue is a unique vocalist that deserves celebrating and I will happily go and see her perform live any opportunity there is.
