Before 4ZZ could start broadcasting in 1975, a transmitter was ordered from the U.S. But after it was lost on the dock in New York, 4ZZ's chief engineer at the time Ross Dannecker built the station's first transmitter.
GRESHKA
Greshka is in town and this high-energy, high-paced and high-volume music will certainly get the toes-a-tappin. After distilling the grooves of Eastern-European klezmer and brass bands from the Balkans, Greshka mix in western-classical, metal and jazz to make a potent concoction of in-your-face multicultural ear-alcohol.
Greshka are a Brisbane-based gypsy band, playing the music of the Balkans, Israeli/American Klezmer and the brass band traditions from Serbia. Having played at some of Australia’s biggest festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival, The Snowy Mountains of Music, the Valley Jazz Festival and the Queensland Multicultural Festival, and played with names such as The Barons of Tang, The Woohoo Revue and the Crooked Fiddle Band; Greshka is the next biggest name in neo-gypsy.
A number of performance options make Greshka perfect for any occasion. Onstage shows, for the attentive music-goer, feature complex original compositions and arrangements of traditional music. ‘Offstage’ performances, designed for entertainment venues, feature party music played for dancing and merriment. A fully mobile Chochek-style street performance see’s Greshka perform Serbian brass band music while marching the streets.
Regular performances in Brisbane, various tours interstate and frequent radio play are rapidly growing Greshka’s fanbase across Australia.
The line-up is comprised of clarinet, trumpet, alto and baritone saxophone, double bass and percussion. Current discography includes Greshka's Debut EP "I Hear This CD is Really Good". A full-length album is due to be released in July, 2011.
