Around 1998 4ZZZ, 4MBS, and Family Radio started broadcasting from the one installation at Mt Coot-tha. Prior to this 4MBS and Family Radio had merely leased land beside 4ZZZ but then Brisbane City Council decided that having three transmission towers and huts in the one place was an eyesore and encouraged the three radio stations to share facilities. This resulted in the three radio stations developing a company called Broadcasting Park to negotiate with the Council. This company consisted of three shares, one owned by each member station.
The M-Humm
Brisbane psychedelic noise poppers The M-Humm are now getting back into the scene with not one but TWO EP's for a mid 2012 release, which also happens to coincide with a number of as-of-yet unnanounced shows planned throughout the year.
Released in early Febuary is a taste of whats to come. The seven minute psychedelic space opera titled 'Eynoc ist Bunt tI' is as grand and intriguing as it's title and description. Released as a free download on the bands newly aquired facebook page (www.facebook.com/themhumm {'like' us we only just started!}). The single also features B-Sides and outtakes from the groups first release ii!! and more.
The bands first proper EP however is a little different. 'Piano Wire' is a collection of five songs recorded solely on a one hundred and fifty year old piano over one week at frontman Bradley Armstrong's mothers farm located on the outskirts of Redland Bay. The five tracks vary from instrumental piano pieces, pop songs about girls, to a Boogie Nights inspired polka freak out! A fifteen minute improvised experimental piece doesn't hurt either.
Piano Wire is some of the bands finest minimalist pieces to date and adds a new dimension to the ever changing sound of the group.
The second as of yet unnamed EP is to be released at the same time as 'Piano Wire'. It follows the lines of the bands first acclaimed release ii!!. But with the group growing to loath the eight track EP, the band heads in a new direction with the release favouring shorter sharper songs. The release draws influence from the local surf scene to nineties slacker rock still with a noise and experimental grandeur to each track.
The group live however still play as a collective using a revolving door of talented Brisbane musicians with the ensemble having only one permanent member. One night a performance could be a solo show with a drum machine and a lot of alcohol the next could see twenty percussionists with strobe lights wrapped around their necks covering Tyler, The Creator.
The outfit will be bringing the controversy of their early live performances coupled with home made confetti cannons, seizure inducing strobe lights, live art through overhead projectors and other tricks and surprises. Not to mention mind boggling journeys through musical soundscapes.
This shit is worth selling your children and moving to India to live under a rock!
