On 14 December 1988, 4ZZZ was taken off air and forcibly evicted from its UQ premises by the then student union executive, headed by one Victoria Brazil. The move prompted many previously apolitical students to take a firm stand against the move and to rally support for the station. While Zed was not to return to the premises its' volunteers had helped hand-build, unprecedented community support saw the station live to fight another day.
Motorway Ends
The band features Michael Jansen on guitar and vocals, David Gooch (ex 'Verge') on drums and Nick Bragg (ex 'Semicolon') on bass. Active (and at times, inactive) since New Year's Eve 1999, Motorway Ends has had a number of different lineups but songwriter Michael Jansen has kept going because you can't fire yourself (or can you?). Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, Michael used to play bass in 'Let's Planet' (Alternative pop band featuring Alan Galloway and Caroline Easther - (ex 'The Chills')), 'Surge' (Rock band featuring Julian Dixon, Matt Hay, and Steve Cournane (ex 'The Verlaines'), and others. After moving to Brisneyland Michael played bass in Alternative blues band 'Hunnicut' with Emma Dyson (ex 'Outa The Mud'), Paula Girvan, Matt Bouwmeester and Shane Spoor (also the drummer in Motorway Ends Mark Two and Three and recording engineer/co-producer for all of these recordings). Motorway Ends has played at The Alliance Tavern (Club Psycho), The Alley and The Tingalpa Tavern. The band has also recorded a 'live to air' at Nasty Studios in West End (Thanks Nasty) which 4ZZZ played on a Saturday afternoon as well as interviewing Michael and BeniMCSquared (bassist 4 Mark Two Motorway Ends), (thanks Zed). Bands Motorway Ends have played with include: Leichhardt, Granvil, Toerag, Undertoe, Members of the PeoplePeople, Noxious, Carryover Champ, Foreign Body and Lair. Well now, don't be a stranger...drop us a line and let us know what you think. For info on who played on what song and what they had for breakfast that day please check out our blogs and watch this space for further news as it comes to hand. Playing soon at the bar down the end of the dystopian road (or Motor Way) in which you, yes you, reside...Cheers big ears:-).
