Outside The Academy

"A nomadic producer and multi-instrumental performer" "Echoey mix of rock/electronica"

Outside The Academy is Pawel Cholewa (pronounced Pa-vell Ho-liv-er); a nomadic producer and multi-instrumental performer who “has the balance between experimental and euphonics just right” (Jae Salmon – 4ZZZ).

“Outside The Academy is about sustaining moments of suspense and euphoria. [His] echoey mix of rock/electronica embodies heavy breathing and minds expanding” (Sarah von Bock – Happy Music Blog).

After playing within the stream of indie rock, electronic and folk bands in and from his hometown of Melbourne since the mid 2000s, Cholewa, in 2014, decided to roll solo with the release of his debut self-titled EP Outside The Academy, which was written, recorded and produced independently in the anomalous seclusion of tropical Queensland.

“The paradox in his music is sublime, eerie compositions laced with electronics; it's music that is aching to be the married to a David Lynch flick” (Leona Devaz – Weekend Notes).

OTA spent much of 2014 touring the east coast circuit, performing at a number of music festivals across Australia and promoting his EP, before returning to Melbourne in Summer to commence work on the release of his 2015 debut single ‘Rebel (Revels)’.

At the beginning of 2016 Cholewa teamed up with Canberra drummer Nicholas Peddle (The Fun Machine, Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens) in the construction of a a new single “Stray”, which is currently in the works and due out in April, as well as working on an upcoming EP due out later on this year.

Meddling with the minimalist production of glitchy beats, loops, samples and layered melodic guitar effects Cholewa creates a full band-like presence, whilst interlacing and intertwining experimental and ethereal elements to create his own ubiquitous school of sound in Outside The Academy.

-- Get to know our sub musos --

First time you ever listened to 4ZZZ?

Driving through Brisbane in late 2014. It was Underground Australiana. It was pretty crazy stuff.

First time you were ever played on 4ZZZ?

2014 on the J Spot.

First gig you ever played?

A high school battle of the bands in 2003. The band I was playing in rocked a pretty caustic and unintentionally fast-paced version of "Sweet Home Alabama". I was 15 and forgot about half of the lyrics.

Funniest on-stage f##k up?

Devoting a song to "my favourite fictional character; the Lord Jesus Christ”. I may have misread the room in this case.

If you could play with one band/muso (dead or alive) in the 4ZZZ carpark who + why?

Spinal Tap. For the irony and a laugh.

What is the kewlest/most definitive feature of your group/musical project?

Eerie compositions laced with electronics.

If you were to turn out your pockets at the end of a tour, what is the most common thing you would find?

Shame.
