David Darling

On the same day he arrived in Brisbane in February 1978, David Darling attended a Joint Effort at the University of Queensland. Little did he know, a few months later he'd be working in promotions at 4ZZZ alongside Peter Williamson, the newly employed Station Promotions Coordinator.

After seeing the lack of Brisbane live music venues featuring local and interstate bands playing
their original music - other than the 4ZZZ Joint Efforts - it was decided that 4ZZZ needed to support the local music scene through a more regular venue with a strong focus on South East Queensland bands.

The Queens Hotel was secured on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights for the station to
promote live music. Grand opening was May 24th 1978 and featured Skyhooks and Boys Next
Door. From then David, Peter and the 4ZZZ team went on to promote at The Exchange Hotel featuring local upcoming original bands, The Surfair and Mooloolaba Hotels at the Sunshine Coast and after losing the
University refectory for Joint Efforts, moved them to be presented at Cloudland.

In today's Talking Zeds, Heather talks with David Darling about his promotions work at 4ZZZ in the late 70s with early Joint Effort stalwarts The Survivors joining on the phone during the first hour. Don't forget Joint Effort 50 on Saturday November 8!
