The 100 year-old ‘Engine Room’ at Teneriffe, which has historically been used as a storage facility for the wool industry, will now operate as a cafe.
The opening came amidst strong opposition from many local residents, with the Brisbane City Council receiving some 400 submissions calling for the project to be scrapped, as well as an unsuccessful appeal to the Planning and Environmental Court.
Peter Dutton targeted by activists
Activists have targeted a breakfast event that Immigration Minister Peter Dutton was attending as a special guest.
The ‘Business Breakfast’, which was organised by Liberal National Party MP Tim Mander and was being hosted at a Brisbane restaurant, was disrupted by protesters who claimed Mr. Dutton is a criminal under international law as well as an inept manager of government business.
Similar plans made by protestors led to the cancellation of a function that Mr Dutton was due to speak at last week.
NT Government spending millions on new reviews
The Northern Territory Labour government is budgeting for a total of 33 new reviews, feasibility studies, steering committees and inquiries predicted to cost taxpayers nearly $12 million (12 million dollars).
Despite the fact one of these initiatives includes the $2.4 million town camp review which was started by the former Country Liberals Party government, these estimated figures do not include the Territory's current budgeting of $27 million to pay for its share of the NT youth detention royal commission.
The budget announcement comes after after Labor was openly criticised by local business about perceived inaction as the local economy softened.
Not everyone is in favour of the proposed spending, Deputy Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said holding too many reviews risked “paralysing the state during a tough period.”
Latest polls predict a hung parliament for Britain
The latest exit poll figures are revealing a possible hung parliament for Britain, a result that is set to turn British politics on its head and have large ramifications for upcoming Brexit negotiations.
The exit polls so far predict the Conservative party has 314 seats, short of the required 326 seats needed for a majority.
Labour is predicted to win 266 seats, the Scottish National Party 34 and Liberal Democrats 14.
Historically, the exit poll, otherwise known as the people’s opinion, has been an accurate depiction of election outcomes in Britain with exit polls in 2015 predicting the outcome within 15 seats of the Conservative total, and within 7 seats of the Labour result.
Qatar supports Gaza
Doha, the capital city of Qatar, continues to host political leaders of the Hamas group, in what the country’s Foreign Minister says is an effort to facilitate peace in Palestine.
Sheikh Mohammed said the act is “coordinated with the US” and denies accusations from several Arab nations of supporting armed groups.
The minister’s statement comes four days after several Arab countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt, cut diplomatic ties and transport links with Qatar, leading to the biggest crisis the countries have had in years.
Qatar has continuously voiced its support of a two-state solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which has reached its fiftieth year.
