Die Antwoord: Donker Mag

Die Antwoord are on a roll. They’ve pissed off Lady Gaga, catapulted South Africa into the spotlight, and created a hybrid rave-rap genre all of their own. Donker Mag is no less mental or offensive than their previous albums $O$ and Ten$ion. Opening number ‘Don’t Fuk Me’ isn’t a song so much as it is a phone call featuring rapper Ninja telling his manager Tony not to f*ck with him. Happy-Go-Sucky-F*cky’ is a blistering, raving anthem of freakiness, with singer Yolandi shrieking, ‘Okay! Bitch! Get the f*ck off me!/I freak you the f*ck out/’Cos I choose to be free/F*ck your rules!’ The word f*ck is used freely and with force, and the song basically sums up Die Antwoord’s entire message – ‘F*ck your rules/You just wanna be me’. ‘Ugly Boy’ is the standout romantic ballad of the album, and is kinda cute in its own way. ‘Ragin Zef Boner’ is basically an ‘all the ladies love me’ anthem, but much, much ruder. Hit song ‘Pitbull Terrier’ is a blistering, put your hands in the air and party tune, and is best listened to while dancing like you don’t give a f*ck. Donker Mag is pumping, thumping, rough and rude, freaky and funny. If you like Die Antwoord already, you’ll likely love it. If you are offended easily, best to look the other way. -Kathy Pollock
