NSW Treasurer calls union "racist", attacks anti-privatisation campaign

The New South Wales State Treasurer Andrew Constance has criticised a union campaign against Chinese investment, calling it racist and hurtful to trade relations.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, or the CFMEU, is running a campaign claiming Chinese owned State Grid Corporation is a likely buyer of the New South Wales state energy network.

Treasurer Andrew Constance called the online and television advertisement “despicable”, claiming it is a “racist rant” and that the union is making false allegations about the process of selling the state’s power assets.

The selling and leasing of state assets is a hot topic in the New South Wales election campaign, with the Labor Party voicing a strong anti-privatisation message but the Liberal Party claiming privatisation will lower bills and increase state revenue.
