A Female trainer and Female Jockey have won this year’s Birdsville Cup, a first in its 134 year history.
The sixteen hundred meter race was contested by a 10-horse field and was won by Darwin-based jockey Kayla Cross on the Heather Lehmann-trained Moore Alpha. It came after bobcats tended to the track right up until an hour before races got underway to make sure it was fit for the event, as an outback deluge had threatened to wash out the race. Brisbane photographer wins top national awardA Brisbane photographer has been named Australia’s best Landscape Photographer at this year’s Australian Professional Photography Awards.
The award was presented to Brisbane Based photographer Jannick Clausen and based on a collection of landscape photographs he took in Denmark during a trip he took there in March. The awards, held in Melbourne on August 31st, also awarded six other Queensland photographers in various other categories. NSW to criminalise 'revenge porn'In a response to NSW privacy inquiry the state government will move to criminalise revenge porn making it an offence to create and distribute sexually explicit images without consent.
A parliamentary inquiry last year had looked at several aspects of privacy laws which also included whether or not a legislation should be brought in or updated in the current digital age. Released in march a report by the Upper House committee, recommended that NSW create laws allowing people to sue should their privacy is intentionally or recklessly invaded. Albert Namatjira artworks decayingThe Site manager of a Northern Territory Historical Precint says their collection of Albert Namatjira paintings are decaying, and is pleading for funding to provide a proper gallery.
Rodney Matuschka says the two paintings , worth $30-$40 thousand dollars are being eaten away by insects because the makeshift gallery they are hanging does not have proper temperature control. Mr Matuschka says the collection was significant in Australian art history because, as a whole, it is the birthplace of modern indigenous art. He estimates he needs at least 50-60 thousand dollars. Zika virus imported south east asia The Zika Virus behind the outbreak in Singapore has been found to have imported from South-East Asia, and not Brazil as originally thought. An analysis commenced by the National Public Health Laboratory and the Bioinformatics Institute discovered that the Zika Virus in two patients from the first wave were belonging to an Asian Lineage. The Aedes mosquito-borne Zika, which has been detected in 67 countries and territories including hard-hit Brazil, causes only mild symptoms for most people such as fever and a rash. AFD beats Agela Merkel's party in state voteA German anti-immigrant party has made huge gains in a state election, according to official results.
Alternative for Germany (AfD) received about 21 percent of votes in the eastern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region, beating Merkel's Conservative Christian Democrats to take second place with 19 per cent of votes. Al Jazeera journalist, Dominic Kane, reporting in the region, says the repercussions of this result will resonate across Germany because within 12 months there will be a general election.
