No Brow art show speaks with Barbara Rosenthall - Part 3
Original Airdate: October 13, 2013.
Barbara Rosenthal is an American avant-garde artist, writer and ‘media poet’ living in Greenwhich Village, New York. Rosenthal’s works have often been categorised under the umbrella term of New Media art, but include video, photography, performance, installation, text works, collage, artist books, objects and poetry among other mediums. These works often use ideas or phrases, particularly aphorisms, taken from the journal she has kept since age 11, and reiterations of earlier works often reappear throughout her ouvre. Known for her deeply introspective approach to art-making as a way of dealing with questions of how to “exist in the world”, Rosenthal is often contextualised in the fields of existential philosophy, surrealism and conceptual art. Facilitated by Brisbane-based performance collective, Exist, she recently visited Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, for a series of lectures, screenings of her video works, and live interactive performances.
Andrew and Nicola spoke to Rosenthal last Wednesday night at regular audiovisual event, Audiopollen, in Brisbane, after she performed two interactive works - media morph performance ‘I’m Growing Up’ (2013) and ‘Existential Interact with Identity Theft Masks and Provocation Cards’ (2009).
