- Melbourne’s András, aka Andras Fox, real name Andy Wilson, has been busy, as always. In addition to compiling the excellent Midnite Spares compilation with fellow radio-show host Instant Peterson last year, he also put out a collaborative ambient album as Wilson Tanner and two EP-length 12”. One of these was under the name Andras, the other under the alias House Of Dad. He’s kicked this year off remixing Holy Balm, as well as a Julia Gillard-samplin’ remix of Glamouratz. He’s now just released a new 12” called Sanity, on the hard-to-pronounce Punp Records.

This new project is supposedly dedicated to his mum, as opposed to House Of Dad, which payed homage to his plumber father. The respective EPs are quite distinct though. While House Of Dad drew upon ambience and break-driven grooves, Sanity is definitely upfront and club-ready. It is more akin to last year’s Untitled EP, with its fast tempos and its pumping, techno-inflected production.

The EP opener Vinyl Only takes a tongue-in-cheek jab at the world of vinyl purists, starting with a sample from some festival, a woman stating “Our next DJ is playing vinyl exclusively, and what we need you to do is take one step back and also anyone with glitter don’t throw it now as it's not going to sound good”. It then launches into a thudding kick and bouncy bassline, complimented by good drum programming, sullen chords and bleeps. Another favourite is Sanitiser, another satisfying dance track. Drums and deep bass tones simmer slowly before some typically smooth Andras chords come in, full of propulsion and forward movement. 40K is a straight ahead banger, full of ravey-sounding hits as it lumbers ahead.

This record is definitely made for the club. Heavy beats and basslines take precedence over breaks and ambience. If you have followed his work in the past you’ll know with every release he pushes his sound into somewhere new. This time round the intensity is up. At the same time, he’s maintained his nuanced and thoughtful production, progressing his polished style further. Long story short? Andras is always taking risks and they always turn out well.
