- From what I can gather, which to be honest could be more, the Khmer Rouge effected a kind of stasis on much of Cambodia's pop music - basically by killing everyone involved, sometime after 1975. It didn't wipe those sounds out, however. These uniquely Cambodian reimaginings of Western pop and rock'n'roll have, like seeds waiting for the weather to get better, only started to sprout and bear fruit much later on. So, the anachronistic sounds of 1970s Cambodia now ring out across the country, mostly - I'm given to understand - from the country's ubiquitous karaoke bars. This is certainly where The Cambodian Space Project found it's key ingredient, karaoke singer Srey Thy. The band - otherwise comprised of Cambodians both local and ex-pat as well as a few Australians to round out the mix plucked her out of obscurity headed for the capital Pnomh Penh and started gigging like crazy. They've toured internationally, they're signed to boutique Aussie label Metal Postcard and now they have a full-length too. I'm given to understand they have a fairly universal appeal to Cambodian ears, and I have a feeling their rocking and rolling will find a few followers elsewhere.
